This month’s rare blue supermoon is commonly known as the Sturgeon Moon, because of the abundant sturgeon in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain in North America.
The Celts called it Dispute Moon and Lynx Moon, the Anglo-Saxons the Grain Moon, Corn
Moon and Lightning Moon, all relating to the relationship between natural cycles and the coming harvest.
A Blue Moon occurs either when there are two full moons in the same calendar month, or, as is the case here, it is the third of four full moons in a season - between a solstice and an equinox. Supermoons occur when the moon's orbit is closest to Earth at the same time as the moon is full.
Sun in Leo, this full moon in Aquarius is square to Uranus, opposing the Mercury retrograde cazimi and Venus is forming a T square with the Jupiter and Saturn, making this an intense and volatile mix that signals catalytic change in all aspects of life, particularly in politics, finances and global systems. Sudden, unexpected changes which we can be in fight or flow with. No room for the old, time to unzip the past and run naked howling into the winds of change. Our nervous systems are under stress from solar radiation with geomagnetic storms and solar flares peaking [see nervous system ritual] Whatever unfolds during this time, we must hold in our vision humanitarian progress, liberation and democracy.
The role of Aquarius as the water-bearer is to take the accumulated wisdom acquired on the journey of the zodiac and pour back these inner waters into the earth. This is the middle of winter, a time when we cross the threshold at the midpoint and shift our attention towards spring and the year ahead. The eleventh house is about our role within the collective and wider community, and Aquarius asks us to think differently and to come up with new ideas and inventions so that together, we evolve. In traditional astrology, it is ruled by Saturn, and Uranus in modern, which are reflective of the rebellious, liberated and changeable air element of Aquarius, while also recognizing that in order for change to be enacted, it must be integrated into reality through discipline and the implementation of structures and systems.
In esoteric astrology, the ruler of Aquarius is Jupiter, which bestows a desire for the progress, evolution and expansion of humanity to come from a place of benevolence and compassion. Its metals are lead and, to a lesser extent, tin, aluminium and uranium. An air sign, the energetics of Aquarius are active, hot and moist, and it is a fixed sign. Through its polarity, Leo, Aquarius is reminded to bring the abstract, futuristic, detached nature of its quest for humanitarian progress back in to play for human and for heart. The glyph of Aquarius represents both water and air as frequency and vibration. This is the energy that it pours onto Earth.
Aquarius is associated with the alchemical process of multiplication; transformation moves from the individual to the multitude, the masses, society as a whole. Aquarius rules the ankles and calves, Achilles tendon, electrical impulses, nerves and circulation. Imbalanced Aquarians can be ungrounded, aloof and over-idealistic, struggling to focus and in need of the nervines and relaxants of Venus and the Moon. They can also be in need of blood tonics to assist with blood stagnation or poisoning, along with Mercurial nervines to address rhythmic disorders of nerves, circulation and electrical impulses. Plants of Aquarius are Saturnian and Uranian, often with eccentric growth patterns which support the circulatory and nervous system, and they are high in nutrients.
Clary sage essence supports Aquarius in seeing the way forward, and helps in interpreting spiritual and mental insight into an embodied, felt sense. Water violet essence encourages emotionally detached Aquarius to move towards interconnectedness and a deeper heart connection. Stimulants that awaken the senses and clear the mind, such as ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) pine (Pinus spp), ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) and speedwell (Veronica persica), help the fixed-air quality of Aquarius with visioning and moving forward. Nervines, such as lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), wood betony (Betonica officinalis) and passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), support an overstimulated and overwhelmed Aquarius. Saturnian herb skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is an ally to Aquarius as a nervine and relaxant, drawing the energy down from the head and nourishing exhausted nervous systems. Sweet violet (Viola odorata) assists Aquarius in relieving tension in the body that causes headaches and respiratory conditions. It contains rutin and salicylic acid, so is useful in alleviating inflammation as well as bodily aches and pains. It is traditionally made into a syrup.
