WITH LAURA COPSEY AND SAIL BRITAIN
Facilitated by artist and musician Laura Copsey, the Life of Islands residency explores ‘islandness’ – the special nature of islands – with a particular focus on inhabited places. These particular islands are the Scottish Hebrides. As a group of eight artists, we explored together notions of remoteness, connection and identity, at the intersection between land and sea.
Due to stormy seas, we made three sails from Mallaig to the Isle of Rum, then to shelter in a loch at Arislaig, before returning back to Mallaig. Our boat, Merlin, posed as a metaphor for a community in which we shared our values and ideas. Travelling by sail allows an appreciation of distance, separation and the elements and opportunity to develop as a crew. The boat, as our island, allowed us develop and exchange perspectives, stories and creative processes.
As a collective exercise, we were given blank pages with quotes on them covered up with tape. A hydrophone played the sound of the sea beneath us as the boat swayed and in response, we drew for a few minutes, then we passed the page along to the person to our left and began drawing on the page that was handed to us, building upon the other artworks. We continued this process of creation and exchange until we felt the pages were complete, with the exception of the Jacques Derrida quote, "There is no world only islands' - which felt too vast to touch.
