Our Wilder Selves

Without remembering our innate connection to nature, and our primal, embodied selves, we forget how to be in service to life. How can we meet ourselves in deeper ways? How can we embody and represent our inner nature, what’s in our bodies, while attuning more with wild nature and what’s alive in our second body?

Rewilding Journey: Embodied Transformation (allow one hour)

1. Grounding Meditation:

Objective: Create a sense of rootedness and inner connection.

Introduction:

Take a moment to settle in, wherever you are. Feel your body resting in this space, supported by the ground beneath you. Let the rhythm of your breath slow down as we prepare to journey inward—back to a place of deep connection, where you can reawaken your wilder self.

We’re here to remember our natural essence—the part of us that is deeply rooted in the earth and connected to the world around us. Through stillness and breath, we’ll explore that connection together.

Action:

Take a moment to settle into this space, feeling your body supported by the ground beneath you. Allow the rhythm of your breath to slow, creating space to fully arrive.

Today, we’re reconnecting—not just to ourselves, but to the earth and the collective journey we’re on. Each of us plays a role in shaping a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. Through the practice of rewilding, we’ll remember our connection to nature, to each other, and to our deepest, truest selves.

Step 1: Body Scan and Grounding:

Gently close your eyes if that feels comfortable or soften your gaze. Begin by noticing the points of contact between your body and the earth—the soles of your feet, your seat, your hands. Simply allow yourself to arrive here, in this moment.

As you breathe in, imagine the energy of the earth rising up through the soles of your feet, traveling through your legs, into your torso, and expanding through your entire body. This energy is the earth’s nourishment, a reminder that you are grounded, supported, and held.

Visualize roots extending from your feet, deep into the soil beneath you. These roots represent not just your connection to the earth, but to the shared mission of creating a future that is sustainable, equitable, and regenerative. With every breath, feel these roots drawing up strength, clarity, and purpose—just as we strive to harness these forces for justice and equity in our work and in our world.

Step 2: Awakening the Wild, Primal Self:

Now bring your awareness to your heart center. This is the seat of your wild self, the part of you that is instinctual, free, and fully alive. It’s also the part of you that knows your role in something much larger—the call to help shape a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

As you breathe, imagine this wild, primal energy expanding—first in your chest, then throughout your whole body. This energy, much like the strategies we build in our organizations, is about more than individual action. It’s a reminder that we are part of a greater whole. Just as we aim to drive transformation in organizations, we are also here to drive transformation within ourselves.

Feel this energy grow. How would it feel to move through the world deeply attuned to this wild self, grounded in purpose, and unafraid to challenge the systems that no longer serve our planet or our people?

Step 3: Rewilding and Reimagining Collective Transformation:

In this space, you are both grounded in the earth and connected to something larger—our shared mission of justice, equity, and sustainability. As you sit with this energy, imagine the world we’re building together. A world where organizations unlock their full potential by leading with equity, where climate, gender, and racial justice are woven into every decision. This is the future we are here to co-create.

As you breathe, feel the alignment between your inner wildness and this collective vision. What does it feel like to embody both strength and purpose? To trust your instincts and also work in service of a greater, more equitable world?

With your next few breaths, start to bring your awareness back to the present moment. Know that this connection—to the earth, to your wild self, and to the larger vision of justice—is always available to you.

When you’re ready, gently wiggle your fingers and toes, roll your shoulders, and slowly open your eyes.

Take a moment to honour yourself for taking this time to reconnect. Just as we help organizations unlock their potential, remember that you, too, have this wild potential within you—grounded in the earth and aligned with a mission of justice. This connection is always available, always present.

Thank you for your presence, for your commitment to yourself, and for being part of this journey toward a more equitable, sustainable, and regenerative tomorrow.

2. Somatic Movement: Rewilding Through the Body:

Objective: Connect with your body in a natural, uninhibited way through somatic movement, balancing a sense of grounding and freedom.

Action:

Introduction:

This is a gentle somatic movement practice designed to help you to reconnect with your wild, primal selves through movement, without needing to follow any strict guidelines. This is an invitation to listen to your bodies.

Shake & Release:

Start tapping your heels up and down on the ground and begin to shrug shoulders and begin to gently shaking your hands, arms, and legs, and gradually increase the intensity to your entire body.

Imagine you are shaking off the layers of stress, societal expectations, or anything that feels heavy. Close your eyes and let go of any stiffness or control in your movement.

Transition the shaking into a more natural, flowing movement, allowing the body to sway or move in a way that feels organic.

Exploring Nature’s Movements:

Nature-inspired somatic movement. Tune into the elements of earth, air, fire, water and aether. Invite your body to move with the elements—moving like water, wind, or trees or any external element of nature that you intuitively feel like embodying.

For example:

Water Flow: Encourage fluid, wave-like movements from your body. Let your body flow and release, imagining you are moving like a river or ocean waves. This allows for gentle, continuous motion.

Wind/Tree: Sway and bend like a tree in the wind, feeling the contrast between groundedness (roots in the earth) and lightness (branches in the air). This invites flexibility and presence.

Tuning into Breath and Body: Throughout the movement,  stay connected to your breath and how your body feels—always moving in a way that feels right for you.

Stillness & Integration:

Slowly bring the movement to a close. Stand or sit, noticing the sensations in your body, breath, and energy after the movement.

Reflect on how your body feels now compared to when they first started.

Reflection & Integration:

Objective: Take time for silent reflection and integration of the movement practice.

Action:

Sit or lie down and reflect on the experience of movement and rewilding through your body.

Silently consider: *“What part of your natural, wild self emerged through the movement? How can you bring more of this energy into your daily life?”

Write down a few reflections or make a mental note of insights or sensations that you want to carry with you.

Objective:

You are invited to make a personal commitment to continue your journey.

Action:

Take a final grounding breath to bring you back into the present moment.

Place a hand over your heart and commit to a daily or weekly practice (such as a grounding breath, a simple movement, or a moment of stillness) that reconnects you to your wilder self.

Rewilding is an ongoing journey—one they you return to whenever you need to reconnect with your deeper, more natural essence.

Chloé Dyson (insight lead at TCO and co-founder of weareearthbound), was joined by Nell DeVito (Managing partner and COO of MPowerd Analytics and a guide of transformative wilderness experiences), Natasha Lythgoe (a rites of passage guide and regenerative coach) and Alexander Pimor (first proxy for nature on the board at Faith in Nature and Director of Governance at the Earth Law Centre) and Sophie Hellyer (wild water swimming coach and founder of Rise Fierce).
