Lucid Dream
I’m walking across a vast open field. Suddenly I stumble upon the edge of a cliff that seemingly came out of nowhere. There is a sheer drop down to the ocean. I’m startled and get that intense sensation of the fear of heights and this makes me immediately go lucid in the dream.
Now realising that I’m safe within the context of a dream, I feel exuberant and full of positive energy and decide to jump off the edge of the cliff and fly out over the ocean.
I take the leap and begin flying swiftly over the waves whilst trying to work out where I’ll direct this lucid dreaming experience.
Then, instead of trying to control the dream, I decide to have a conversation with the dream and ask it to show me something.
I stop flying and I am hovering horizontally high up in the air over the ocean. I shout out to the dream ‘Please show me something!’
As soon as I shouted out this statement something bizarre began to happen. I was filled with the most intense and expansive energy, coursing through my whole body. LIke I was being plugged into some kind of energetic conduit.
Then the most remarkable thing happened. I started spontaneously singing in an unknown language. My singing voice was powerful, ethereal and technically sublime. I was hitting notes, tones and vocal inflections that were not possible for me in waking life. The melody and language coming out of my mouth sounded not only ancient but also cosmic. And it wasn’t just coming out of my mouth, it was deeper than that. It felt like my soul. My whole being was producing this phenomenal piece of multidimensional music.
As the song was being channelled out of me, there were the most incredible tendrils of light pouring out of my mouth. Each beam of light had a different colour that corresponded to the specific musical notes that I was producing. A form of synesthesia. I was in absolute awe as these iridescent, multi coloured laser beams flowed out of my mouth along to the mystical unknown singing language.
The song, language, the light, the colours all held an energy and the dream was showing me the positive power that it had.
I woke up astounded by what the dream had shown me.
Glossolalia, the phenomenon of speaking in an unknown language had happened to me before in psychedelic experiences, altered states of consciousness and mystical experiences but this was the first time I sang it and saw its synesthesia and felt its vibrational effects.
Glossolalia, from the Greek words glōssa ‘language, tongue’ + lalia ‘speech’ has been a documented occurrence experienced by humans for thousands of years. Connected primarily with intense mystical experiences, altered states of consciousness and trance states, it is the act of uttering approximating words and speech that have seemingly no meaning.
Also known as ‘light language or ‘speaking in tongues’ the phenomenon can be found in a wide range of cultures and cosmologies from the Ancient Greek, Pythia of the oracle at Delphi uttering mystical words that were interpreted by a priest, to the frenzied utterances of evangelical Christians of America.
The cosmic mystery language is said to be prophetic, the language of the soul, a healing vibration infused with ‘light codes’ that activate.
When I experienced Glossolalia during Ayahuasca ceremonies my hands were doing involuntary hand movements, gestures and mudras that seemed to correspond with the mysterious language that was coming out of my mouth. Powerful cosmic energy flowed around me as I spoke and gestured. Post Ayahuasca ceremony, the experience reminded me of a William S Burroughs quote: “ Language is a virus from outer space”.
It also made me think of a few talks I heard by mystic and ethnobotanist Terence McKenna describing similar experiences he had with Glossolalia and psychedelics;
“Then out of my mouth comes language—or, at least, syntax—but without meaning. Some kind of glossolalia where the modality of language is preserved, but the meaning is not. It’s a kind of an ecstasy. It sounds gibberish in three-dimensional space, but in that space it seems to be the key to unlocking a world made out of syntax and meaning.
The other thing about psilocybin and the DMT-thing is that it seems to be a catalyst for glossolalia. This is why I think it must have had something to do with the evolution of language. I mean, when you take psilocybin you can fall spontaneously into (Text sourced from states of glossolalia. Sometimes, on DMT, it’s almost impossible to control. It just spontaneously comes out.”
In my own experience, the interesting thing about Glossolalia is that once it’s activated it can be summoned. I continue to use this cosmic language in healing sessions, energy clearings and find myself channelling it more and more in lucid dreams and out of body experiences. With each utterance I can feel a vibrational change and a positive emotional and energetic shift.
